We are always exploring the reasons why mindset development is such an important factor in our workplaces.
Gemma has taken a small chunk from her keynote speech about the importance of trust.
Why should we trust our colleagues?
Trust is a feeling which is born out of the environment in which we operate and that is set by leaders. Innovation requires experimentation, and this requires failure and if I do not feel that I can fail safely. If I trip over, someone might look at me and say, "Try again", I’m not going to try because I don't feel safe to do so.
If you are a trapeze artist, why would you ever try a new skill without a safety net? Without that safety net, you’ll do the minimum, you’ll do the basics, you’ll stay safe, just enough to get by. And in our workplaces, our colleagues are the same. if they don't feel safe they will do just enough to not get in trouble, just enough that no-one would complain, but never go above and beyond and will never be themselves.
If you’re going to hire idealists in your workforce to enhance and transform your company, you need to take care of them. You need to commit yourself to taking care of all the people you have in your organisation, so the people in your organisation can take care of the cause, the customer and the transformation you want carrying out.
And if you ask them, “Why are you giving blood, sweat and tears for us?” You better hope they say, “Because you would do it for me.”
